Q1. How Much Can I Get?
A. This will depend upon your eligibility.  If you are eligible for the first time home buyer grant then a one off grant is $7,000 is available. The Federal Government did boost the grant in 2008 but as of 31 December 2009 the grant reduces back to the original $7,000.  You may also be able to get rebates on stamp duty, and some states offer added concessions to first home buyers.


Q2. How Do I Apply?
A.  You can apply via the Office of State Revenue.  Forms are available to down load from their website.  A mortgage broker or your lender will be able to assist you with completing the application.  You can also visit www.firsthome.gov.au

Q3. Can I claim the grant if I do not plan to live in the property?
A. At least one applicant must occupy the home as their principal place of residence for a continuous period of at least six months, commencing within 12 months of settlement or construction of the home.

Q4. Does each applicant get $7,000?
A. Only one grant is payable per eligible transaction (contract) regardless of the number of eligible applicants involved in the transaction.



Q5. I am not a permanent resident.  Can I still buy property and claim the grant?

A. You must be a permanent resident or Australian citizen in order to claim the First Home Owner Grant.



Q6. My partner bought a property in his name, can I still claim the grant if I decide to buy another property?

A. You and your spouse/partner must not have received a grant in any State or Territory of Australia. You and your spouse/partner must not have owned residential property, either jointly, separately or with some other person prior to 1 July 2000, in any State or Territory of Australia




Q7. How Long Does It Take To Get Approved for the grant?

A. The grant usually gets approved at the time of settlement.  Most major lenders are authorized to receive the grant on your behalf.  If you are building a new home, the grant will be approved once your lender issues the first scheduled loan payment.


Q8. Which Homes Qualify?
A. A home that qualifies is a building that may be lawfully used as a place of residence and is suitable for use as a place of residence.  This includes new and existing homes:
•    Houses
•    Flats
•    Units
•    Townhouse or apartment
